“Well, I couldn’t do that!” – Defending Our Choices

  If you make any unusual lifestyle choices, I promise you’ll hear this remark.  Sometimes, it’s made in a wistful way, as though the person wishes they could do whatever it is.  As if they really mean, “Wow, that’s wonderful!  I wish I could, but I don’t think I’m strong/clever/brave enough.”  Other times, it’s merely criticism masked as a benign statement.  Then, it really means, “That’s terrible! That makes you a bad person/parent.  I could never do THAT!”  On occasion, it means exactly what it sounds like.  “Hmm, that’s interesting, but I couldn’t do it.”

It’s all about seizing opportunities! My thought process seventeen years ago: I’m going to homeschool.  I love to cook, and I really love to eat.  I  definitely need to seize this opportunity to work some food into homeschooling.  Hmmm…Food comes from different cultures.  History and Social Studies focus on cultures.  So, I should eat (I mean cook.) food from different cultures for those classes!  Then, if the historic or culturally significant food is tasty, I should seize the opportunity to coopt it into my repertoire.  While I’m at it, I should seize the opportunity to add bacon…and maybe more cheese…
